Seriously, I’m in the United States. I’ve begun to sell T-shirts, sweatshirts and the like. I’ve found that it’s AMAZING how much UPS wants to ship. For one T-shirt (box, etc. it came to 2.5 lbs. which they rounded up to 3lbs of course) and voila, the price was $106.00 to ship!!!! For a freaking $20 T-shirt!! (A sweatshirt might be bought from me for $90, it’s worth noting). I’m apparently quite naive and inexperienced. Business folks?? Shippers?? What’s the secret? Other people ship all over the world for a similar weighted item that someone bought for nine bucks. HOW?
Thanks. I’m seriously befuddled.

A lot of online merchants are running into the same problem. International shipping is quite costly to deal with for a small business, and you also have to worry about customs compliance too. The issue you’re running into – is a matter of dimensional weight versus actual weight.
I have seen quite a few merchants using Bongo International to alleviate these issues. What Bongo does is they allow your customers to sign up for a US address, which is essentially a unique suite number at their global distribution center. So, when you have to send a product to someone in Europe – you’re just sending the product to their US-based address…and you’re only paying for domestic shipping.
From there Bongo will notify the customer that they have received the item, and continue to forward the item to them in Europe. They will even offer your customer the opportunity to repackage and consolidate their items, to bring the cost of international shipping down.
